Doula For Me
"It takes a village to raise a child."
Why I became a doula
I wanted to become a postpartum doula because I still remember how it felt when I had my first child. I remember feeling alone and lost when I came home from the hospital. At the hospital, you had nurses constantly checking up on you and reminding you to nurse the baby, to take your medications, and even brought meals for you. Luckily, my mother came to my house the day after I got discharged and I instantly felt relieved. She really took care of the baby day and night so I could rest when I wasn't nursing or pumping. She helped me bathe my baby for the first time because I was scared that I was going to drop her in the tub. She even cooked me nutritious meals so I can be replenished from giving birth and produce milk to nourish my baby. These are just some of the things she did, but what really helped me is that I didn’t feel alone in this new journey called motherhood. I felt like someone had my best interest at heart, someone to encourage and guide me in periods of doubt and confusion. Someone to remind me that I needed to rest and renourish myself when I didn’t even realize I needed it. Someone to teach me all the important aspects of caring for an infant and someone I knew I can count on to walk me through each step of the way.
I cannot imagine any woman going through postpartum alone. Some of us are lucky to have people like my mom around to help but some of us aren't. You heard many people say "It takes a village to raise a child" and that is a thousand percent correct. I truly believe that we, as women, are not meant to go through something traumatic happen to us (giving birth) alone. We need support mentally, emotionally, and physically through one of the hardest yet most rewarding things that we will ever go through in life! I will walk through this new journey with you and get you back on your feet with this new chapter and title called motherhood.
